Mossgreen-Webb’s is New Zealand’s only trans-Tasman fine art, multi-departmental auction house, specialising in single owner collections.
Established in 1976, Mossgreen-Webb’s has a long and rich history as New Zealand’s premier auction house. Founder Peter Webb began his career in the art industry as exhibitions officer at Auckland Art Gallery in the 1950s. He established Auckland’s first dealer gallery and opened with Colin McCahon’s first Auckland exhibition in 1958; then, by the early 1970s, Webb began to introduce art auctions to his New Zealand clients. These auctions were met with an enthusiastic response and, gradually, the business transformed to be the first auction house in New Zealand to sell contemporary art at auction.
For more than 35 years, the Webb’s name has been a highly respected and successful brand with an extensive and loyal client base.
Peter and Ann Webb sold the business in October 2014 and a little over two years later, in December 2015, the business was acquired by Melbourne-based auction house Mossgreen, with the aim to continue the legacy of founder Peter Webb. Mossgreen is Australia's largest, most successful auction house and the most favoured avenue for collectors selling complete collections. Since acquiring the former Webb’s auction house in New Zealand, the company is now run as a trans-Tasman regional business.
Mossgreen-Webb’s is led by CEO Paul Sumner who, alongside the New Zealand team, looks to re-establish the business as New Zealand’s leading auction house.
Mossgreen-Webb's offers clients high-quality service, unrivalled expertise and excellence in marketing and client services. Fine art remains the core of the business, with the department led by Sophie Coupland, daughter of Webb’s founders, who has more than 20 years’ experience with the company.
In the categories of Chinese & Asian Art; Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia; Fine & Rare Wines; International Decorative Arts; Jewels & Watches; Oceanic, Māori & Indigenous Arts; Sporting Memorabilia; and Stamps, Coins & Postal History, Mossgreen-Webb's offers vendors trans-Tasman exposure and buyers access to diverse catalogues featuring quality works and luxury collectable assets.
Mossgreen-Webb's plans to create an outstanding auction house experience in New Zealand.
