Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia

Since it was established in 2014, our Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia Department has grown from strength to strength.

Head of Department Robert Richards and Specialist Catherine Davison, together with New Zealand consultant, Ian Nott, form a dynamic team and offer extensive knowledge and industry experience in both motoring and auctioneering.

2016 was an outstanding year of growth for Mossgreen’s Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia department with the August auction achieving strong results. Two Jaguars headlined the sale, one a 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series III FHC setting a new Australian auction record of $149,500 and also a 1970 E-Type Series II 4.2 Roadster selling for $201,250. Prior to this sale was the exceptional June auction which achieved almost $2 million in sales with 132% sold by value and 88% sold by lot. Included in this auction were six cars from the Collection of Australian Grand Prix Driver, The Late John Calvert.

The auction of the Roy Savage Collection of Classic Cars, held 4 December, achieved nearly $1.5 million and resulted in 138% sold by value. The auction marked the entrance of Mossgreen-Webb’s into the New Zealand market for collectors’ cars and automobilia. All thirty cars from the personal collection of the renowned Wellington businessman sold and multiple auction records were set for the 1955 Jaguar XK140 (pictured above, achieved NZ$258,750), the 1972 Rover P5B, 1966 Jaguar MK II and the stunning 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL selling for NZ$149,500.

We have a long-established history in motorcycle auctions; recent highlights include: a 1915 Ariel V-twin, which sold for NZ$35,000; a 1931 AJS S3 Transverse V-twin, which sold for NZ$64,280; a 1936 Burt Munro/Duncan Meikle Velocette drag bike, which sold for NZ$71,000; a 1936 Indian Chief 1200, which sold for NZ$71,500; a 1950 Indian Roadmaster, which sold for NZ$59,500; and a 1955 Vincent Black Knight, which sold for NZ$100,000.
